Symbolic anthropology studies the way people understand their surroundings, as well as the actions and utterances of the other members of their society. These interpretations form a shared cultural system of meaning–i.e., understandings shared, to varying degrees, among members of the same society (Des Chene 1996:1274). Marshall D. Sahlins, a brilliant and witty anthropologist who, starting in the 1970s, explored how individuals shape and are shaped by their cultures — a point he had already put in practice a Marshall Sahlins, in full Marshall David Sahlins, (born December 27, 1930, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.), American anthropologist, educator, activist, and author who through his study of the people and culture of the South Pacific—primarily Hawaii and Fiji —made monumental contributions to his field. The Sahlins family has generously established a fund for an annual Marshall Sahlins Memorial Lecture to be administered by the Department of Anthropology. Many have criticized his work for only including time spent hunting and gathering while omitting time spent on collecting firewood, food preparation, etc.
