A seminal text on the ‘Jante Law’ published by the Danish/Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose in 1933 promotes modesty as an important cultural value in the Nordic region (Rudnick 2003), i.e. don’t believe that you are better than anyone else. The Jante Law as a concept was created by the Dano-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose. In his novel A Fugitive Crosses His Tracks (En flyktning krysser sitt spor, 1933, English translation published in the USA in 1936) identified the Law of Jante as ten rules. This translation of the Jante Laws was suggested by Leif Knutsen (except that I replaced "venture to think" with "to presume", as suggested by someone in the group): The Jante Law.
